POMPEIANA S.C.I.

The site consists of a ridge that separates from the Mount Croce - Mount Selletta ridge, it descends southwards above the village of Pompeiana and is bordered to the west by the Rio Canevai and to the east by the Rio Chiuse.

Arid meadows, Mediterranean scrub, and woodland strips prevail, while cultivated terraces are to be found in the lower part.

From a geological point of view, "flysch" is certainly the most typical kind of rock (Sanremo flysch) composed of different layers of limestone, marl and clay rocks.

Most of the area consists of grassland and bushes (Mediterranean scrubland), where we can find many orchids in spring. Downy oak (Quercus pubescens) woods and Aleppo pine trees are common, too. In the lower part of the site there are cultivated terraced fields.

As regards the endemic animals, the most important species is the ocellated lizard (Timon lepidus), which in Italy we can only find in western Liguria.

Among the reptiles, the most important one is the Montpellier snake (Malpolon monspessulanus) and among the amphibians the parsley frog (Pelodytes punctatus).

Worth remembering are a few species of migratory birds and three species of bats.
